Infant, child and boostercarseats are required by law and when properly installed, save lives in the event of an accident. Unfortunately, the vast majority ofcarseats are improperly installed, creating a risk of failure. It is important to remember that child safety seats should not be installed in the frontseatof a vehicle. Children must be placed in rear-facing seats from birth to 12 months and it is recommended that they use rear-facing seats until they reach the maximum weight for theseat. Children under 49 should use a boosterseat.Carseats have expiration dates and should be replaced if the vehicle in which they are installed has been in an accident. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) issues guidelines regarding proper installation of child safety seats and conducts training programs to ensure that seats are properly installed. Glenn Kaleita and George Fleites of the DHFD are certified to conduct theseinspections. Freeinspectionsare availableMonday-Friday from 8 a.m.- 2:30 p.m.
